Every parent wants the best for their child and so do we.
One of our goals is to educate every school-aged child in Australia to minimise their risk of being diagnosed with a preventable cancer.
1 in 3 cancers are preventable, yet Australia has a large burden of preventable cancers. Small changes to lifestyle and eating habits can make a huge difference to a child's future.
There's a reason our tours only run during term time. That's because we want to reach as many school children as possible through our Be Fit, Be Healthy, Be Happy program. Riding into the school, meeting the kids and giving a short, fun-filled presentation is a highlight of every tour. Together, we help to demystify cancer and encourage the kids and their school community to make healthy lifestyle choices for their future.
"I'm so grateful to Tour de Cure. Experiencing the Be Fit, Be Healthy, Be Happy program helped me to talk to my own kids about my cancer."
Peter Braine, TDC Rider
On every school visit we raise awareness that a combination of the following factors can increase the risk of cancer:
"Cancer is an issue that will probably touch all families at some point in time. It's why I'm so passionate about this program and educating children about cancer, its causes and how it can be prevented."
Heidi Bramberger, TDC Rider
Thanks to the ongoing generosity of supporters - individuals, families, corporate partners and community groups - we're able to distribute cancer awareness packs to every child at every school we visit. The packs contain our extremely popular high-bounce balls - guaranteeing hours of handball fun in the playground - suncream and of course, our very own cancer books. We created and published these books to help children and their families navigate the cancer experience and to promote health and wellbeing.
Terry Hawkin's story about Flipman and his nemesis Pitman is a relaxed and humorous way of helping children understand cancer and its treatment. It's also a great way of helping families to have those difficult, yet all important conversations. The book raises awareness in a fun-filled way about healthy eating, exercise and sun protection.
This is a collection of inspirational, uplifting and heartbreaking stories about cancer. Each story is written from a personal perspective, that can help people and their loved ones feel less alone and isolated as they cope with cancer, its treatment and its impact.
"The kids I teach at St. Augustine's, Maryborough, were very excited after your visit. They kept asking me if the book in their bags were "Be fit" books. My own kids loved seeing you at their school too. My 3-year-old has taken Flipman to bed with him!"
